Athlete’s foot fungal infection & treatment
Most people carry fungus on their skin. However, it will only florish to the point of causing Athlete’s foot if conditions are favorable. Sweaty feet, tight shoes, synthetic socks that do not absorb moisture well, a warm climate,and not drying the feet well after bathing -all contribute to the overgrowth of fungus.
A way to overcome this problem is to design a suitable carrier system that can protect the oils from these factors, and yet, release them in a controlled manner so that the antifungal action can be fully harnessed. This is where the IIT-H team has achieved progress. The team is developing antifungal panty liners for mitigating vaginal candidiasis. The developed formulation can also be used as a transdermal patch /mucoadhesive patch to treat skin and mucocutaneous infections without inducing resistance in the fungal species.
The Researchers team turned to natural products to solve this problem. The idea of using carriers for controlled release of drugs has been around and various types of carriers including polymeric micro capsules, nano emulsions/colloids and hydrogels have been developed for various drugs.
Elaborating on this research, “Herbal essential oils and their ingredients are a promising class of effective antimicrobials Thymol found in oregano oils, carvacrol found in thyme and eugenol found in clove oil, have excellent antimicrobial action against all types of Candida fungi. The problem with essential oils and their components is that they are sensitive to temperature, light, and pH, and decompose easily.”
In addition to treating infections without running the risk of inducing drug resistance, the drug thus delivered can counter fungi that have developed resistance to conventional, anti-fungal drugs.
Microorganisms like bacteria and fungi have an interesting capacity to evolve resistance to antimicrobial agents wont to destroy them. There are several instances of this and therefore the drug industry is facing an enormous challenge with many antibiotics becoming less effective.
The study, published in the journal Materialia, has been led by Mudrika Khandelwal, Associate Professor, Department of Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering, IIT-H, and her student Shivakalyani Adepu.
The research was supported by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Grants from the US conglomerate AT&T.
As a follow-up of the findings, the researchers are developing a prototype, anti-fungal hygiene products with funding from the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC).
According to Mudrika Khandelwal, there is a need for developing alternate, non-resistance inducing treatment options for fungal disease. “Given the prevalence of fungal afflictions such as vaginal infections, diaper rash, athlete’s foot, and nail fungus caused by the Candida family of fungi, drug resistance can become life-threatening,” she explained.

“Currently we are developing antifungal panty liners for mitigating vaginal candidiasis. The developed formulation can also be used as a transdermal patch/mucoadhesive patch to treat skin and mucocutaneous infections without inducing resistance in the fungal species,” polylactic acid microcapsules to encapsulate the essential oil ingredients. Polylactic acid polymers are bio compatible and biodegradable and are already widely used in the medical field. The researchers found that using the micro capsules alone as the carrier could cause uncontrolled, burst release of the ingredients.
To delay the release of the active principles, the researches designed another level of protection. The polylactic acid micro capsules that contained the active substances were further incorporated into a secondary barrier made of nano fibrous bacterial cellulose. In addition to designing the double-barrier carrier system, the researchers also enhanced the anti-fungal activity of their formulation by using synergistic mixtures of thymol, carvacrol, and eugenol.

Athlete’s foot treatment vinegar
Dry your feet thoroughly especially between your toes after bath, either with a cotton towel ,or with a hair dryer . antiperspirants such as sphatika bhasma [alum] may be used on your feet to keep down the sweating .wear absorbent socks, preferably cotton ,and wash them in hot water with bleach .keep your shoes well ventilated,and give the ample time to dry before wearing again .if possible, remove the insoles of shoes to allow them to dry out over night and apply vinegar to avoid re-infection. Open- toes sandals are good to wear as they allow the feet to dry. Do not share your shoes.
Soak the feet in a solution of swarjikaaksharaa (baking soda) for about 30 minutes daily. This will maintain the acid base relation of the skin and keep your feet dry. Alternately add two tablespoonful of laundry bleach to 3 or 4 litres of warm water and soak your feet for 10 to 15 minutes twice a day.
Wash the feet in a mild solution of tankana bhasma ( a compound of boric acid and soda). A mixture of two tablespoonful of table salt to half litre of warm water is another good soaking solution. Soak your feet for 10 to 15 minutes and dry thoroughly. The salt eradicates the fungus and reduces perspiration.
Athlete’s foot treatment by Cinnamon (dalchini)
Another house hold remedy is cinnamon (dalchini). Bring four cups of water to a boil, add 8-10 broken sticks of cinnamon, reduce heat to low and simmer for five minutes; remove and steep, covered, for 45 minutes. Use it for foot bath.
Athlete’s foot treatment apple cider vinegar
Dab alcohol or spirit on the affected area with cotton balls and allow drying. Aloe-vera gel, apple cider, vinegar, honey—- all are equal effective as external application.
Athlete’s foot treatment with garlic
The compound known as ajoene, found in garlic, is a powder anti fungal agent. One method is to rub a clove of raw garlic on the fungus. A second method is to put some freshly crushed garlic on the affected area and leave it for on half an hour. Then wash with water. Do this once a day for two weeks to see the result. If the garlic burns, remove, wash with water and try again with diluted garlic juice. Onion juice is also similar and effective in action.
Athlete’s foot treatment with black pepper oil
Mahaa marichyadi tailam, and Ayurvedic oil made from black pepper and few other effective ingredients exhibit anti fungal and anti-itching properties. Rubbing some on the affected area with a cotton ball several times a day for three to five weeks should eliminate the problem.

A healthy diet should be maintained. Foods with high sugar content should be avoided, including undiluted fruit juice. Eat several servings of curd daily and take a reasonable amount of the B-vitamins in the form of natural food grains to rebuild your flora and help fight infection in case of antibiotic usage.
