What Is Coenzyme Q10 | What Does CoQ10 Do For The Body- Benefits, Dosage

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a powerful antioxidant which plays a vital role in energy production and inhibits free radicals and cell damage. Coenzyme Q10 is naturally produced by our body. It can be obtained from outside the body by eating various foods like eggs, cold water fish, organ meat, nuts, poultry.

Coenzyme Q10 or CoQ10 is found in the most aerobic cells of every organism from microorganisms to mammals. It is stored inside the cells in mitochondria which plays a vital role in metabolic activity and to produce energy in the body to perform each and every activity.

What Is Coenzyme Q10?

Coenzyme Q10 is also known as ubiquinone. It is an oxidative dietary supplement and is present naturally in majorly used human body parts like liver, heart, kedney. It is stored inside the mitochondria of cells. It is widely found in the cells of animals, plants and even in the cells of  microorganisms too.

Coenzyme Q10 is also known as ubiquinone, Coq10, coenzyme q, Coq, ubiquinone Q10, ubidekarenone or vitamin Q10. The most common coenzyme Q in human body’s mitochondria is coenzyme Q10

In coenzyme q10 Q stands for quinone group and it is 1,4 benzoquinone. 10 is the number of isoprenyl componds attached to it’s tail. In ubiquinone which is a natural form of it, these numbers may vary between 6-10. It is fat soluble and resembles to vitamins.

Coenzyme Q10 is fat soluble quinone structure which is similar to the structure of vitamin K. The whole body’s content of coenzyme Q10 is about 500 to 1500 mg which decreases by age. It is the most significant Leopard antioxidant which prevents the generation of free radicals, modifications in protein, DNA and lipid.

What Is Naturally Fermented Coq10?

At present Coq10 is high in demand so it has started producing in Laboratories too, to use in various dietary supplements like in medicines and even in cosmetics.

There are three ways to produce coenzyme Q10 out side from the body. Which are:

  1. Extraction from the biological tissues- In this process coenzyme Q10 is extracted from other organism’s body parts and stored by preserving it to use further in various ways.
  2. Chemical synthesis- In this process several chemical reactions are performed to obtain a resultend product coenzyme Q10.
  3. Microbial fermentation- This is the last and most preferred method to form coenzyme Q10 outside from the body. In this process micro organisms undergo in several mutations and by processing coenzyme Q10 is obtained. Agrobactetium tumefaciens is used for mutation by using a series of treatments like High Hydrostatic Pressure (HHP), UV irradiation, and Di Ethyle Sulphate (DES) treatment to get mutant strains that showing higher coenzyme Q10 production than wild-type strains.

Above first two processes are not preferred to use because so many Chemicals are used to get coenzyme Q10. As it’s not environment friendly. The last process microbial fermentation is the preferred process of researcher’s, to obtain coenzyme Q10. As less Chemicals are involved, easy to control, less expensive and is so natural and environment friendly too.

What Does Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) Do For Your Body

Coenzyme Q10 is a lipid antioxidant which prevents the generation of free radicals, modifications in proteins and DNA. The deficiency of coenzyme Q10 in human body leads to interruption or dysfunction in respiratory chain. Coq10 can prevent some damage to the organs by neutralizing free radicals.

  • Coq 10 plays a major role in the generation of cellular energy by increasing metabolic rate.
  • It plays an important role in aerobic cellular respiration as a part of electron transport chain.
  • This process generates upto 95% energy of total body. Thus coq10 is present in high concentration in the highest functional organs like heart, liver, kidney. So that it can produce as much energy as their function continues smoothly.
  • Coq10 is an antioxidant thus it protects cells from damage.
  • It’s natural production decreases in the body as age increases. It can be added in the form of supplements. Rather there are no adequate evidences of it’s efficacy that it can certainly protect from heart failure. But it can slighly lower your blood pressure and helps to improve some symptoms of heart disease with proper medication.

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) Benefits

  • Coq10 is used in the treatment of heart disease, breast cancer, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease. It is widely used in cosmetic industry and as a dietary supplement as well.
  • It plays a major role to increase metabolism and generates energy in our body and we need this energy to perform our various works effectively.
  • It improves oxygen percentage in cells, especially in heart cells. Hence it protects heart cells to be damaged and prevents heart attack
  • It can adversely affect on muscle pains and liver problems.
  • Some of the study shows that coq10 can be used in the treatment of migraine headache.
  • Coenzyme Q10 is used to increase male fertility. Coq10 is used in the treatment of low sperm counts. It increases their motility and quality. Thus helps in fertility.
  • It is used in the treatment of cancer and HIV
  • It is also used as an energy supplement but evidences are lack to advocate it’s energy boosting efficacy.
  • It shows it’s positive effect on neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease.
  • In cardiovascular diseases CoQ10 has shown markable effects. In many cardiac failure cases CoQ 10 improved their quality of life, less frequent hospitalization.
  • Coq10 penetrates in the epidermis layer of skin and reduces oxidation. In this way it improves skin quality and keeps your look younger.

How Much CoQ10 Should I Take?

There is no fixed limit how much CoQ10 should you take. The range varies between 30-90 mg per day (in 24 hours) and can be divided in two or three intervals, for adults. It’s 100 miligrams to 200 miligrams dosage are enough.

For the better absorption of coq10 take it with the meal that contain oil substance. It is fat soluble, so it can be easily absorbed by mixing in oil present in your food.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1.  Is CoQ10 And Omega 3 The Same?

Ans. Both are different as Omega 3 fatty acid supports heart and blood vessels and is responsible for the elasticity of both. Whereas coq10 is an intracellular antioxidant fluid means it is present inside your cell. And is responsible for the health of tissues thus organs. Because many cells cumulatively make a tissue and so many tissues make an organ– many organs make an organ system— all organ systems make whole body.

Q2.  What is q10 good for?

Ans. CoQ10 helps to keep your vital organs healthy. It produces 93-95% of the total energy of tge body which is used further to perform several activities. It is found in high concentrations in the organ cells which are highest in activity like heart, kidney, liver. CoQ10 helps them to work uninterrupted by boosting metabolic rate and supply energy.

Q3.  Is quercetin the same as co q10?

Ans. Both person quercentin and coq10 are cardioprotective supplements but are different from each other. Quercentin is a flavonoid which is found in berries, apples, tea leaves, onion, vegetables, nuts and seeds. Whereas coenzyme q10 is naturally occured in every living organism. Both help to reduce blood pressure, DNA damage and more as described above.

Q4.  What Is Ubiquinol Coq 10?

Ans. Ubiquinol is a reduced form of CoQ10. Ubiquinol aquires 93-95% of Coenzyme 10 in pool plazma of a healthy human body. It has showen protective effect against influenza virus in mice.
