Diabetes Type 2 Symptoms/ What Diabetes Type 2

  • 3 billion people in the world are diabetic
  • 90-95% of them have Diabetes type 2
  • Anxiety and  depression could indicate the onset of this condition
Among 30 million diabetic Americans, 90-95% of them are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. CDC reports that about 1 in 4 adults living with the condition didn’t know they had it. It is important to watch out for warning signs.

Type 2 diabetes or diabetes mellitus type 2 occurs when a person’s cells cannot utilize blood sugar efficiently to produce energy. It happens when the person’s blood sugar levels get elevated resulting in insulin resistance. The body fails to secrete adequate amounts of insulin to function properly and in turn, makes the body’s cell show no reaction to insulin.

The hormone insulin secreted by the pancreas lets the body utilize sugar from carbohydrate food sources and maintains the optimal blood sugar level. Elevated blood sugar levels make a person experience this mood sign.

While type 2 diabetes or diabetes mellitus type 2 can be managed efficiently, it can create added stress to the patients. Individuals with this condition might have a lot of concerns pertaining to diet restrictions, measuring insulin levels and worrying about their long-term health. For some diabetic patients, such concerns become more intense and they feel anxious.

A 2013 research has reported that diabetes is linked to an increased risk of experiencing anxiety disorders as well as elevated anxiety symptoms. A 2008 study reported that diabetic patients are 20% more likely to suffer from anxiety disorders compared to those without the condition. It was found to be particularly true among the Hispanic population.

A 2006 study that sought to find out if depression and anxiety might precede the onset of diabetes found that anxiety symptoms emerged as a significant risk factor of type 2 diabetes onset.
When you are stressed, your blood sugar levels can get affected. In some individuals, it can raise blood sugar levels and among certain others, it can lower them as well. Another study has reported a link between glycemic control and mental health conditions including depression and anxiety.
Also, knowing that diabetes might put them at risk of health complications including kidney diseases, heart diseases, and stroke might also cause anxiety.

Symptoms of anxiety include insomnia, rapid heartbeat, increased sweating, muscle twitching, weakness, lethargy, gastrointestinal problems, nervousness, restlessness and being tense.
Now the problem is to know what food to avoid in diabetes?

Which Food to Avoid in Diabetes

Dietary sugars such as fructose and sucrose have been linked to the development of NAFLD. Research from 2017 describes how these sugars contribute to fat buildup in the liver and affected blood sugar level also. Following are some foods to avoid with type 2 diabetes.
  • Major culprits include store-bought and commercially processed foods, such as:
  • baked goods, like cakes, cookies, doughnuts, pastries, and pies
  • candy
  • ice cream
  • sugary cereals
  • soft drinks
  • sports drinks
  • energy drinks
  • sweetened dairy products, like flavored yogurts
  • To identify whether a packaged food contains added sugar, read the ingredients list on the product packaging. Words that end in “ose,” including sucrose, fructose, and maltose, are sugars.
  • Other sugars commonly added to food products include:
  • cane sugar
  • high-fructose corn syrup
  • corn sweetener
  • fruit juice concentrate
  • honey
  • molasses
  • syrup
These are some foods to avoid with type 2 diabetes. Another way to tell how much sugar is in a food item is to read the nutrition facts label and to look at the number of grams of sugar that are in a serving for that item — the lower, the better.

According to research from 2012, NAFLD makes it harder for your body to manage cholesterol on its own. This can worsen NAFLD and increase your blood sugar level indirectly.

Try to limit your intake of certain types of fats to help control your cholesterol and treat NAFLD. Fats to avoid include:
Saturated fats. These are found in meats and full-fat dairy products.
Trans fats. Trans fats are often found in processed baked goods, crackers, and fried foods.

Many of the lifestyle changes listed above — including losing weight, staying active, and adopting a Mediterranean diet — can also help you manage your cholesterol. Your doctor might also prescribe medication for high cholesterol.

Diabetes:  20 herbs to control diabetes naturally

Allopathic drugs like insulin, sulphonylureas, biguanids have definitely helped in controlling the blood sugar levels and improving the quality of life but none of them has been unequivocally successful in maintaining normal glucose levels and avoiding later stage complications of diabetes. about 15 to 20 percent patients with newly diagnosed non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus have little or no response to sulphonylureas and with each year of treatment, about 3 to 5 percent of the patients, who have achieved better acceptable glycaemic control, loss their responsiveness. Biguanides therapy is associated with lactic blood disorders, water retention, and several others.

Inspiteof all the advances in therapeutics, diabetes still remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the world. As per the available data, there are at least 20 million diabetics in India.

What is Diabetes ?

Ayurveda recognizes this disease right from the vedic period with name of prameha. The prameha denotes prabhuta mootrata (excessive urination) and aavila mootrate (turbid urine) and madhumeha means the flow of madhu (sugar) from the body. Depending on the physical constitution or body type, or the health status of an individual, ayurvedic classics advocate two different types of therapy schedules for diabetes. They are:

Therapies for Diabetes

  De-nutrishment and samshodhana (cleansing):

This treatment is prescribed if you are obese and heavily built. In this, along with anti-diabetic drugs, maximum stress is given on de-nourishment of fats by elimination of endotoxins by way of various exercises, fasting and cleansing manoeuvres known as Panchkarma (five fold therapies viz. emesis, purgation, enema, blood letting and errhines).

Santarpana (repenishment) and brumhana (body bulk promotion):

This is prescribed if you are chronically ill, with low immunity and underweight due to the draining of essential nutrients. This therapy helps in providing the easily acceptable nutrients and micronutrients to rebuild body tissues and help strengthen the defense mechanism without increasing circulating blood sugar, fats and other metabolites. This prevents further damage and ensures enhanced healing and repair.

For Diabetes Home Remedies

High levels of sugar in the blood leads to diabetes. So, blood sugar levels are needed to be checked regularly. Strict consultation and medication can only treat high blood sugar levels. Apart from that, home remedies can be followed to lower the risk of high blood sugar and control it. The home remedies should only be practiced with proper medications. Do consult your doctor before opting for any of the home remedies. Check out the home remedies to lower blood sugar levels.

Regular workout / Diabetes exercise

Regular exercise can help to lose weight and increase insulin sensitivity, which means the body cells can use the available sugar in our bloodstream better. Also, exercise helps the muscle to use blood sugar for energy and muscle contraction. Some of the workouts for this are weight lifting, brisk walking, running, biking, dancing, hiking, swimming and more.

Keep a check on the carbs intake

Carbs turn into sugar in our body, which then gets moved into cells by insulin. Too much consumption of carbs causes insulin problems, due to which the process fails to pass the sugar into cells. This is how blood glucose levels rise.

Increase the amount of fibre

Fibre slows carb digestion and sugar absorption. This is how it promotes a more gradual rise in blood sugar levels. Additionally, a high-fibre diet can help to manage type 1 diabetes by improving blood sugar control and reducing blood sugar levels. Vegetables, fruits, legumes and whole grains are rich in fibre, and so, they should be consumed to control the blood sugar levels.

Being hydrated is a prime key

Drinking enough water controls blood sugar levels. It also helps your kidneys to flush out the excess blood sugar through urine. Drinking water regularly re-hydrates the blood, lowers blood sugar levels and reduces diabetes risk.
These are several home remedies that can control the diabetes naturally and very effectively.

  1. FENUGREEK SEEDS (methi) : The medical qualities of Fenugreek seeds are described in Ayurvedic literatures. In recent studies, it has been reported that the decoction of fenugreek seeds supresses the  urinary excetion of sugar and relieved symptoms of diabetes. It contains trigonalline, and an alkaloid known to reduce blood sugar levels. You can take seeds after soaking them in water overnight or in powdered form with water or buttermilk 15 minutes before the meal. If you do not like its bitter taste, you can include the seed powder in the preparation of  food such as chapati, rice, dal or vegetables. The intake depends upon the severity of diabetes. Usually the daily dosage varies from 25 grams to 50 grams in two devided doses.

  2. BITTER GOURD (karela) : This has a long history as food and medicines. The fruit and seed of this plant contain most active blood sugar controlling components. This contains an active principle called charentin, which is sometimes called plant insulin, as it clossly resembles insulin from cows (Bovine insulin). For better therapeutic benefits, extract juice from 4 to 5 karelas every morning and take on an epty stomach. You can take seed powder either directly or in the form of a decoction. You can even prepare a curry. However, remember not to fry in oil or add sugar to this vegetable to counteract bitter taste; otherwise, the therapeutic benefits may be lost.

  3. JAMBUL FRUIT (jamun) : The jambul fruit is regarded as a specific medicine in traditional Ayurvedic medicine because of its specific action on the pancreas. Thefruit, the seeds, and the whole fruit juice are sall useful in the treatment of diabetes. The seeds contain jamboline, which controlls the exessive conversion of starch to sugar. For internal usage, dry the seeds, powder them, and take 3 grams, twice daily with water or buttermilk.

  4. HONEY : Since honey consists of velulose, it is not harmful in diabetes. Honey has anti-bacterial and anti-microbial activity due to enzymatically-liberated hydrogen peroxide. Some diabetics feel that they only need to stop taking sugar and honey to control diabetes. However, it is best for patients to know the daily ratio of sugar or honey. This ratio should not betaken at one time, but should be reasonably distributed through out the day. One teaspoon of honey provides 20Kcal of energy. If you can control other forms of food that are equivalent to 20kcal of energy, youare allowed to take one teaspoonful of honey per dat. After a mixed meal, the stomach empties slowly. Therefore, honey eaten after a meal, will not raise blood sugar as much as taken on an empty stomach.

At the doses of 200 mg/kg body weight it has decreased serua lipids, blood glucose and activated serus enzymes. Vaagbhata, the ancient scholar of Ayurveda , mentioned garlic as a best drug in treating vaata type of disorders. It is interesting to note that while classifying 20 types of pramehas, Ayurvedic classics have included diabetes under Vaateja pramehas. The journal of Research in medicine published another interesting finding about garlic. This has shown significant anti-coagulant and fibrinolytic activity. In addition, it also possesses significant cholesterol decreasing properties. It is well known fact that major deaths of diabetes occur due to vascular and neurological complications. Eat 2 to 4 cloves of raw garlic everydayand you can keep the risks at bay.If it is too strong for you to take, there are garlic pills with or without odour.

  8. ALOE : The classic remedy for hyperglycemia is the gelatinous juice from the succulant Aloe-vera plant. This plant is very easy to grow. It does not need direct sun light or much water.
