Psoriasis : 21 Ayurvedic and natural ways to treat psoriasis

Psoriasis results in patches of thick, red skin covered with silvery scales, which usually itch and burn. Psoriasis, affected persons suffer from restricted movement in their joints, emotional distress and cracked skin. The disease may also affect the fingernails, the toenails, and the soft tissues inside the mouth and genitalia.
More treatments are needed for the 100 million individuals worldwide affected by psoriasis. Researchers from Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the Harvard Stem Cell Institute have discovered a possible source of the skin thickening that may be triggered by deregulated stem cells.
WHAT PSORIASIS IS?
In Psoriasis, scaling occurs when, cells in the outer layer of the skin reproduce faster than normal and pile up on the skin’s surface. In many ways, psoraitic skin is similar to skin which is healing from a wound or reacting to a stimulus such as infection.
Researchers from Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the Harvard Stem Cell Institute have discovered a possible source of the skin thickening in psoriasis, which could lead to new strategies for developing treatments for the condition.
Psoriasis, characterized by red, thickened skin covered with scales, eventually causes painful, deformed joints and inflammation in about a third of those with the condition. While new therapies have brought relief for patients in recent years, the underlying causes remains unclear. It is believed to be tied to immune system problems that can be aggravated by stress, smoking, heavy alcohol consumption, skin infections, or vitamin D deficiency.
More people are developing psoriasis. The number of cases per 100,000 people grew from about 50 in the 1970s to more than 100 by the late 1990s. Today, psoriasis affects 100 million individuals worldwide and costs the United States more than $10 billion annually.
 CAUSES OF PSORIASIS
“Psoriasis places social and psychological stress on patients and is associated with risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and more. While steroids and biologics can be prescribed, we don’t have a cure because we haven’t understood the cause,” co-senior author George Murphy, MD, director of the Program in Dermatopathology in the Department of Pathology at the Brigham, said in a statement. “Our initial finding that skin thickening in psoriasis is due to build-up of dysregulated stem cells and their progeny are exciting because it represents a new way of thinking about an old and significant skin disease.”
To gain insights into why skin stem cells go awry, the team focused on the epigenome, the wrapping that causes DNA methylation and directs gene behavior.
“Without understanding the mechanism underlying a disease, it’s hard to find effective treatments,” said co-senior author Christine Lian, MD, a dermatopathologist in the Department of Pathology at the Brigham. “The question we decided to pursue was: Is there an epigenetic abnormality in psoriasis that may explain why stem cells are misbehaving?”
The research team uncovered a defect in the epigenetic covering that resulted in the loss of a DNA methylation hydroxymethylation mark. Also called loss of 5-hmC, this defect could be seen in cells in psoriasis patients but not other thickened skin cells, such as those in callous. Using a mouse model, the team replicated the psoriasis defect and found that it had effects on genes that controlled other skin cell functions.
Types of Psoriasis
Different types of Psoriasis display characteristics such as pus-like blisters, severe sloughing of the skin, drop like dots, and smooth-inflamed lesions. In Ayurveda, these may be correlated with Eka-kushta, kitibha-kushta and sidma-kushta.
Psoriasis affects one to two percent of the population. One in three people reports a family history of Psoriasis, but there is no pattern of inheritance. It can strike at any age, but most often between 15 and 35. Psoriasis is not contagious. About 15 percent have joint inflammation that produces arthritis symptoms refereed to as psoraistic arthritis. Psoriasis can be very painful, but the pain is more than skin deep. It causes dis figuration, and daily care always demands too much time. Embarrassment, frustration, fear, and depression are common.
In extreme cases, loss of self-esteem results in a complete withdrawal from society. However, to control it properly, one should take it lightly.
Psoriasis is aggravated by injury or irritation (cuts, burns, rash, insect bites). Medications (beta-blockers, used to treat high blood pressure, and lithium or other drugs used to treat depression), viral or bacterial infections, excessive alcohol consumption, obesity, lack of sunlight, overexposure to sunlight (sunburn), stress, cold climate, and frequent friction on the skin are also associated with flare-ups of Psoriasis.

Ayurvedic treatment for Psoriasis includes a strict diet regimen and drug therapy. these are often combined with panchkarma procedures that cleans the body.
WHAT DIET SHOULD BE FOLLOW TO CURE PSORIASIS?

Psoriasis, lots of alarming factors such as weather, allergies, and diet—but none of these have been proven in studies. Some research, however, shows that being overweight or obese bumps up your chances of developing psoriasis and once you have it, being overweight or obese can exacerbate your symptoms. One study found that overweight or obese patients who go on a highly restrictive diet—about 1,200 calories a day—can ease psoriasis symptoms. But more research is needed.
There are some diets, according to Ayurveda, that helps to cure your Psoriasis effectively and very easily with no side effects or harm. These are :

  2. Bathing in water added with oil and applying moisturizes can soothe the skin. Scales can be removed effectively and itching reduced with salt water bath.
  3. A proper exercise programme  can improve flexibility and mobility of the joints. For psoraitic arthritis, therapeutic exercise is often targeted at the soft tissues around the joints. Moderate bicycling is good for knees and ankles. Jogging and running can be counter-productive because it pulls stress on the knees and hips. One can get the same benefits with a fast walk. In inflamed and immobile joints, the regimen includes simple stretching exercises.
  4. The warm water of an indoor pool can relax muscles and decrease pain.

It is shown that 5-hmC loss in the skin epigenome can be reprogrammed using basic agents like vitamin C (ascorbic acid). Thus, they believe that correcting this epigenomic defect in psoriasis might halt the downstream signals on other genes. After testing this theory in lab experiments, the team presented preliminary data that suggest 5-hmC levels can be restored to correct the deficiency seen in psoriasis.
While the connection to vitamin C is interesting, the researchers do not believe that the taking supplements alone will correct the problem. The next steps include three-dimensional bioprinting of skin stem cells in the context of their supportive niches, which will be used to test other epigenetic reprogramming agents.
“If successful, our epigenetic stem cell explanation for psoriasis hopefully could transform therapy, allowing for more personalized and targeted approaches directed at the very cells that accumulate to form the heartbreak of this all-too-often devastating skin condition.
